Transport yourself back to the last time you ate a Mexican restaurant. Your server brought you a bowl of tortilla chips and a couple of bowls of salsa while you waited for your dinner. You chatted with your friend and nibbled on one chip, then another, then another. Suddenly, the once-heaping bowl of chips had been reduced to a dusting of crunchy crumbs and salt, and you looked to your friend, pointing at the bowl. Without saying anything, your friend nodded to you as an acknowledgement of what had to be done. Both of you began to survey the dining room in search of your server; you needed more chips, and you needed them now.
It could be true that I am the only tortilla chip addict on the planet, but I doubt it. If someone puts a bowl of those savory, crunchy triangles in front of me I am like a wild animal with its dinner - diving into the bowl unceasingly until I have devoured every last speck of anything edible - perhaps even licking the salt from my plate (don’t knock it ‘til you try it). These crunchtastic chips have stolen my heart, and they have stolen America’s heart too.
According to Statista.com, “Tortilla and tostada chips were rated among the best selling salty snacks in the United States… With 2015 sales worth more than 3.8 billion U.S. dollars, they placed third, after crackers and potato chips.” Is anyone else not at all surprised that they beat out boring, old pretzels in the salty snack category? No offense to all of the pretzel-lovers out there; perhaps it is the memory of dusty bowls of pretzels on bars, or seeing the bags of untouched pretzels at every office party but I can’t bring myself to eat them. Hey, no one can possibly love every snack!
Apparently, consumers love Tortilla Chips SO much that America made a day for them. Yup, that’s right, an entire day is set aside just for these angular chips of delight - and today is that day! Happy National Tortilla Chip Day to all of you salt-licking, bowl-diving, salsa-dipping, guac-scooping snackers out there!
